What is Intuitive Eating?!

I am glad you asked!

Intuitive Eating is a hot topic, but it can be confusing, because it is so different from what we have been taught our whole lives.

So, let's dive in...

Is Intuitive Eating (IE) a diet?

Well, technically, anything you eat is a diet. BUT, it is not your traditional diet where there are "no" foods, calorie counting, time restrictions, macro tracking, measuring, and/or guilt.

Intuitive Eating was created by 2 Dieticians, and has over 125 studies on it to date. It has been around since the 90's, but is gaining popularity!

IE focuses on 10 principles:

  1. Reject the Diet Mentality

  2. Honour Your Hunger

  3. Make Peace with Food

  4. Challenge the Food Police

  5. Discover the Satisfaction Factor

  6. Feel Your Fullness

  7. Cope with Your Emotions with Kindness

  8. Respect Your Body

  9. Movement - Feel the Difference

  10. Honour Your Health with Gentle Nutrition

It is a way of eating that:

  • gives you permission to eat any and all foods

  • encourages eating for physical rather than emotional reasons

  • relies on internal hunger and satiety vs. external "rules"

  • uses nutrition and exercise as a gentle guide rather than a strict protocol

How does it help?

  • can improve health markers, such as blood pressure and cholesterol

  • can improve self-esteem, with less binge eating, disordered eating, and emotional eating

  • creates a more varied diet

  • reduces self-silencing and generate more life satisfaction!
