You Find A Dime - What Do You Do?

"We don't see things as they are. We see them as we are." - Rabbi Shemuel ben Nachmani.

This is quite possibly one of the most profound thoughts I have ever encountered.

Let me give you a digestible example of how this works.

Have you bought a new car lately?

Did you see that same car EVERYWHERE? All of a sudden, every single car on the road was a Black Honda CRV? Because, same!

This is because there's a part of your brain called the reticular activating system, that helps you determine how you see the world.

Now, instead of seeing all of the Ford F-150's, you only notice the CRVs. You now narrow your view, and unconsciously put your blinders on.

However, if you break up with your ex, and they drove a Black F-150, you likely see F-150s everywhere for months. Your brain now has something new to focus on.

If you drive down the road with 3 friends, I can guarantee you will all see slightly different things. You are now seeing the world as you are, not as it is objectively.

Ok, so why does this matter? Who gives a sh*t if you see a CRV and I see an F-150?

The truth is, this is of huge importance if you combine it with gratitude.

If you are in the routine of practicing gratitude and abundance, you will see so many beautiful things to be grateful for.

Here's the difference:

Person who practices gratitude

You walk down the road and find a dime - a sign of abundance!

The sun comes out for 5 minutes - grateful for the warmth!

Your 200m run is 10 seconds faster than last week - improvement!

Person who does not practice gratitude

You walk down the road and find a dime - leaves it, not worth picking up

The sun comes out for 5 minutes - ughhh, it's been so rainy today

Your 200m run is 10 seconds faster than last week - everyone beat me again today

Sound familiar?

Sure, we can look at the world as a "cruel place." You will be proven correct.

We can also look at the world as a "beautiful place." You will also be proven correct.

Your mind is like any muscle in your body. You must train it. And how you train it is important. Keep putting in the reps of gratitude, and you will see it pay off - promise.

Just like that dime on the ground - be the change!
